Welcome to Wasilla!

In South Central Alaska, on the northern point of Cook Inlet, you will find the state’s sixth-largest city, Wasilla. Wasilla began as a small-scale agricultural community but became one of Anchorage’s commuter suburbs and one of the state’s fastest-growing areas. It is situated along the Parks Highway, roughly forty miles north of Anchorage. The offices of several state and federal agencies are located in Wasilla, including the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. The community is also home to the world-renowned Iditarod Sled Dog Race headquarters. In addition to those facilities, Wasilla encompasses the Museum of Transportation and Industry, the Veterans Wall of Honor, technical and career training colleges, a library, the Dorothy Page Museum and Historic Town Site, and several other points of interest.

Additional Wasilla attractions include the eighty-acre Lake Lucille Park and the Mat-Su Valley’s premier indoor sports facility, the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. The center encompasses an NHL-sized ice arena, an artificial turf court, and a walking/running track. The expansive outdoor playground at Wonderland Park is a popular summer destination in Wasilla, as are Carter Park, Nunley Park, the gateway to Hatcher Pass, and Wasilla Lake. You’ll also find charming, family-owned shops, big-box retailers in the Wasilla area, and a wide variety of restaurants, including fast and casual eateries and elegant fine dining establishments.

Incorporated in 1974, Wasilla is home to nearly nine thousand residents today. Those residents are served by the Mat-Su Borough School District and governed by an elected mayor and six-person city council. The community comprises over nine hundred and ninety square miles and over two thousand housing units. More than fifty-five percent of Wasilla homes are owner-occupied, and most real estate in Wasilla can be described as large lots in semi-rural areas with single-family homes. Homes for sale in Wasilla are typically more affordable than similar properties in Anchorage. That said, Wasilla real estate also includes multi-family homes and vacant land upon which to build. There are also more than five thousand occasional, recreational, and seasonal homes in the Mat-Su Borough, in addition to the year-round residences.
